Be careful when you ask for wireless! There are two different aspects of “Micro Camera Wireless”. First is the micro or miniature aspect of the camera and second is the wireless aspect. The wireless aspect is were it gets a little confusing and you need to be careful that your definition of wireless matches the features of your selected camera. We will discuss these two aspects in more detail and then look as several of the popular models.
Micro Camera Wireless
A micro camera normally refers to a very small or miniature version of a traditional video camera. And as is usually the case when you make a product smaller there is often a loss of features. The micro cameras generally do not have as good a lens as a larger camera and thus you may not have the clarity or the range. Plus there many other features found in the newer video camera’s which help improve the video experience that are not yet available in the micro camera.
The other option that may be available in a micro camera is wireless capabilities. And this is were you need to be careful that the camera you select meets your needs. One type of wireless camera is one where there is no wire needed to transmit the video signal to the receiver or viewer. This is critical aspect of the camera along with the distance the signal is transmitted, but don’t overlook that many of the wireless cameras still need a wire connected to an electrical plug for it to receive power. So many wireless cameras still need to be installed or placed near an available source of electrical current.
There are other models of a wireless micro camera where in addition to the wireless signal transmission the camera is battery powered. These battery powered cameras make it very portable and easy to transport, but the video signal is not as strong which reduces the distance it can transmit. And of course there is the need to replace or recharge the battery. So the increased portability from the wireless battery operated camera may be offset by reduced performance.
Also, keep in mind that most wireless micro cameras require a receiver to collect the signal but you still need a viewer or storage device connected to the receiver to process and/or store the digital video images. So the camera (and receiver) is only part of the system.
